What is Reiki?

Reiki is a form of energy healing where the practitioner places his/her hands on the person and channels the 'universal life force' to activate the person's own healing processes, assisting in improving his/her physical and emotional wellbeing.

This practice was initially formalised by Dr Mikao Usui, a Christian minister and School Principal in Kyoto, Japan.  The story goes that Mikao entered into an extensive quest to find the art of 'gentle healing' through 7 years of studying the healing art in Buddhism, Hinduism and Christianity.  He then discovered an ancient text written in 2500 BC, with symbols and phrases that were said to be used by Buddha for healing.  He meditated on Mt Kurayama for 21 days which resulted in a revelation of golden symbols which can be used for healing.  In his excitement, he ran down the mountain, stubbed his toe and it bled.  He clutched his toe and the bleeding pain stopped immediately, and the toenail grew back.  From then on, Mikao dedicated his life to the methodology of hands-on healing and called it 'Reiki' which means 'Universal Life Force' in Japanese.

Reiki has now evolved to a structured training process for the practitioner.

To become a Reiki practitioner, the person can be trained in 3 stages:

  1.  Reiki 1:  The trainee partakes in a training by a Reiki Master.  Usually the training goes over 2 days and 4 atunements are  given by the Reiki Master.  After this training, the person can only practice on him/herself or with family and friends.
  2.  Reiki 2:  After the completion of Reiki 1, the person can then go on to be trained in Reiki 2, again, under a Reiki Master.   The person learns 3 symbols to intensify the healing and to practice distance healing.  Further atunements are also given.  Usually, the training is given in 2 days.  After this training, the practitioner can use the Reiki method to heal the public.
  3. Reiki Master:  After the completion of Reiki 2, the practitioner can choose to be trained as a Reiki Master.  At completion of this training, the practitioner can teach others Reiki 1 and 2.
